Heart “Wreath” for Front Door (or wherever you choose to hang it)

I wanted a “wintery” looking Valentines wreath…

Where I live, we still have a lot of winter left when Valentines rolls around, and I came across this idea from Angie at Post Cards from the Ridge and it was perfect for me! It’s made with a fuzzy and cozy yarn and fabric flowers and is just so cute. Let’s get into the DIY of it!

List of items needed:

Scissors

Glue gun and glue sticks

Heart shape (either wire, grapevine or wood)

Yarn of your choice

Fabric pieces for the flowers

Ribbon for hanging the flowers, if you choose

Optional: Fabric scraps for wrapping the frame, if needed

Heart frame with yarn

I needed a heart frame to wrap and this was all I could find at Hob Lob, so I went with it. A black wire frame or grapevine would’ve been more ideal, but we work with what we got around here! Also, I got the most fluffy white yarn I could find. You could do any color yarn or heft, but I wanted something as thick as possible (more coverage = less wrapping).

Beginning of project

I started wrapping the yarn and realized that the red wire glittery things were going to poke through, so I grabbed some scrap fabric that matches my yarn and my trusty glue gun and wrapped, and glued, the frame with white fabric. It pays to keep those bigger fabric scraps, even though the hubby would heartily disagree.

Happily wrapping my wire frame with fabric.

You can see my yarn knot where I had previously started, I kept that and started the wrapping at that spot so I could continue the yarn when I finished the fabric part. I only hot glued the fabric every 3 - 4 inches or so.

This was a little tedious, but I tried to wrap it as loosely as I could so it looked more fluffy, but still covered everything. I’d wrap the yarn around it several times, then carefully “place” them so they were mostly uniform and gluing every here and there (on the back, of course, lol).

Wrapping the heart fame with yarn! And almost done, yay!

Now for making the fabric flowers. I don’t have good pictures of the process, but basically you twist strips of fabric, about 1 1/2” by 10 - 12” and then curl them into a round shape and hot glue them as you go. Longer strips will make bigger flowers. (You could cut a piece of paper or cardstock slightly smaller that the size you want and glue your twisted strips to it, to help form it, if you want.) I used flannel fabric to go with the cozy look.

You can stop here, or add leaves. I made some of mine two sided because they were going to hang with ribbon and would twist around as the door opened and shut. I laid everything out so I could judge where I want the flowers to go. Then I glued the ribbon onto one side and then glued the leaf and the back flower on.

You can glue your flowers to the wreath, but I wanted more drama, (I’ve been accused of being a maximalist, but I take no offense to truth, lol) so mine are going to hang. I found this cute little velvet ribbon and a pompom type trim that I’m going to use. Also, my door is 8 feet, so for scale, I need a longer door hanging. If you have a standard door, or one with a window, you won’t need it this long/big.

Flowers done and hanging on the wreath!

Here she is, with some flowers on the inside, and some outside. I love this wreath because it’s a perfect blend of winter hoping for spring! I like to put up a few Valentines things at the end of January and leave it to the end of February, or longer.

All done and on the door!

Happy Valentines Day, I hope you feel so loved today and always :)
